Lead, Support and Innovate
Orange City Council is soon to get a new Chief Executive Officer, the selection process is currently happening.
It’s a very responsible position within our City and I wonder if, as a community, whether we should be having some form of input into the process, or at least letting our feelings be known on the type of person we want. I’m not sure if there is a process that enables this but if there isn’t, why not? The Chief Executive Officer is in some respects Orange’s Prime Minister and as such, has the power to influence or impact on many of the important decisions that will affect the future of our City. I for one, wouldn’t mind having a say in the type of person we want in that role. Councils are forever seeking input from the community over things that affect them, so why not something as important as this?
I think it’s fair to say that a lot of locals, and I’m among them, feel our current administration including our current group of Councillors have been a disappointment. Of course, it’s very normal for anyone in any form of government to attract their fair share of knockers and Orange Council is no different. It should also be noted that perception is reality and the current perception of the current council by a lot of people, is that it lacks leadership, vision and isn’t serving any worthwhile purpose. We have an acting CEO and that in itself suggests Council is functioning more in a holding pattern than anything else. We have a bunch of Councillors who are fast becoming known more as rescission makers or a brigade of flip floppers. I know that sounds terrible, but seriously, how else can one say it? Their actions and record of achievements over the last year or two as a team speaks for itself.
My personal view is that we need someone at the top who clearly knows how to lead, and lead in such a way that people will want to follow. Interestingly, it appears that Council may be on the same page as me with this. I saw the advertisement for the position recently and the very first words at the top say Lead, Support and Innovate. How great would it be if the person we ended up with was seen to demonstrate these qualities within a few months of taking over the reins?
Orange, like so many other rural cities, is contending with issues that have never had to be faced before, and like with any new or unforeseen situation, different cities deal with such things in different ways. Some take reactive measures, others get pro-active, while others sit on their hands hoping the problems will go away.
If Orange is looking to appoint a new Chief Executive Officer with the will, skills and ability to Lead, Support and Innovate, and they choose someone who clearly demonstrates they have the heart to do this, we can all look forward to seeing a more pro-active approach than we’re currently seeing from our Council overall. I for one, look forward to seeing someone in the position just like that.
