Fancy a tender steak?

Something out of left field for our Eats segment this week.

The team at Orange City Life is currently tossing around ideas for providing readers with more variety in our content and one of the ideas revolves around sharing information about great products.

The discussion led me to share with my team about the great steak we have been enjoying recently at home. For quite a long time I had gone right off steak and the only steak I would eat was from the Hog’s Steakhouse, they have never let me down and I always enjoy the consistent tenderness.

One day, for some strange reason, my wife picked up a packet of eye fillet steak from Aldi. She made quite an effort to cook it so it was tender and bingo! I couldn’t believe it, it was absolutely beautiful and tender.

The cynic in me said it was just a one-off fluke, so don’t get your hopes up. Here we are about 54 Aldi steaks later and I’ve yet to have one that disappointed me.

Let me now, not only share the product with you, but how we cook it. You might like to try it for yourself.

It’s called Eye Fillet steak, it comes in packets of two in medallion shapes and it’s found in the meat section at Aldi. The size of the pieces varies so it’s a matter of picking the sizes you want. We choose and use them for both steak meals and steak sandwiches and sometimes slice them where appropriate. We’ve had a thicker steak, but we prefer to eat thinner steak. We take a medallion and flatten it a bit by pounding it with our hand. We then sprinkle both sides with black pepper from a mill. We heat a non-stick pan to very hot and give it a light spray of oil. We seer the steak on both sides for no more than a minute then turn the heat down. We then keep turning the steak over as the blood appears. It only takes a minute or two depending on the thickness and experience teaches you when it’s right for your preference.

It’s delicious on its own but Dijon mustard, Dijonese mustard, bbq sauce, mushrooms etc, all offer wonderful additions.

That’s it! If you try it, let me know if I’ve told the truth or not? bob@oclife.com.au
