Mulberry Lane Vet Hospital practice manager Sam Cunningham said the hospital had introduced additional biosecurity precautions for avian patients in response to the H5 avian influenza outbreak.

“At Mulberry Lane Vet Hospital, we have introduced additional biosecurity precautions for avian patients in response to the current H5 avian influenza situation.

“Our main advice to pet bird owners is to phone us before bringing an unwell bird into the hospital. This allows our team to assess the situation and put appropriate precautions in place before the bird arrives.

“For birds showing concerning symptoms, our protocols include:

- keeping the bird separate from our general hospital and patient areas

- using appropriate PPE, including gloves, gowns, masks and eye protection where indicated

- following strict cleaning and disinfection procedures

- minimising unnecessary handling and contact with other animals and people

- reporting suspected cases and seeking advice from the appropriate biosecurity authorities

“For pet bird and backyard poultry owners, we recommend reducing contact with wild birds where possible, keeping food and water protected from contamination by wild birds, maintaining good hygiene around birds and monitoring closely for signs of illness.

“Signs of concern can include sudden or unexplained deaths, respiratory signs such as coughing or sneezing, swelling around the head or eyes, neurological signs such as abnormal balance or posture, or a sudden drop in egg production.”
