Movie buff, Mal MacDonald -- Retailer of the Central Tablelands' (and one of Australia's) best collections of film, television, and pop culture memorabilia -- is moving with the times.

Mal's iconic Reel Memories store is tucked away at Shop 4 inside the Centrepoint Arcade on Summer Street and features an amazing and eclectic collection of everything from classic Golden Years of Hollywood horror films to memorable 1970s Australian television series.

Even he, though, has now decided to take his business into the 21st century… well, into the 1990s, anyway!

"I've always been cash only, but a couple of months ago, I finally added an EFTPOS machine to the shop," Mal says excitedly.

"I've also, as of about eight weeks ago, decided to open on Mondays as well, so it's 9.30am–5pm now for five days, and 9am–3pm on Saturdays," he adds.

Indicating the eclectic nature of much of what he retails, he is now seeking a buyer for a classic piece of musical equipment with long local links.

"We've currently got a Yamaha organ, one of the famous Electone HS models, in the shop looking for a buyer, it's a beautiful piece.

"It came to us from the estate of a well-known music teacher who used to tour locally with her husband for a number of years; there's also the original stool and a bag full of cables and extensions for speakers and the like," Mal explains.

For committed movie, television, and pop fans, it's hard to decide what to buy, from DVDs to movie reels to posters, books, and old LP records.

"We've got so many things, I keep turning them over, original movies, DVDs of horror and fantasy, and literally hundreds of older films with stars like John Wayne, Gregory Peck, Clark Gable, to more modern actors like Bruce Willis and Johnny Depp.

"There's crime, film noir, cowboy movies – Audie Murphy, Randolph Scott – people come in and say, 'I couldn't get it at JB Hi-Fi, and I found it here'; I try and give people what they're looking for; a lot of it came from my old store in Sydney," Mal recalls.

One of his big sellers at the moment, he reveals, are die-cast miniatures of cars from classic movies including 'Back to the Future', the DBS Aston Martin from James Bond, and a canary yellow Dodge Challenger from the television crime series 'NCIS'.

Long-running TV series are another big seller, with nostalgia for the classic years of Australian production another attraction for many fans with Mal also offering great deals at the moment.

"I've currently got original episodes of 'Australian Bandstand' with Brian Henderson as host, featuring a range of local and visiting popstars; Channel Nine released them recently through Umbrella, an Australian distribution company.

"I've also actually got a special at the moment on both Blu-rays and DVDs you can buy any three for $15, or just $5 each," Mal explains.

Like any great collector, with Mal, what you see is what you get.

"Everything of mine is genuine stock, I don't sell pirated copies, bootlegs, computer copies, or burn downs," Mal emphasises.

"With copies, the covers are often poor-quality and the disks themselves tend to have blue tinge to them, that's how you can tell," he concludes.
