Most of us have been impacted at one time or another by cancer. For Sean Ryan and his family, that's turned into doing something positive about it.
Recently signing on for another run in the near-legendary Lunchbox Rally, they are first running a special fundraising trivia night at the Scout Hall in Kite Street this Saturday night, August 22.
Teams and individuals are invited to this fun-and-fanciful evening of obscure facts, arcane information, and general knowledge, with all proceeds going to the good work of the Cancer Council.
Sponsored by Harley & Hem Coffee Brewers in Byng Street, Sean reveals that a number of other local businesses — including Central West Comedy and Farmgate Butchery, along with an original painting donated by Dubbo's Maree Williams — have also generously joined the event.
"We're doing a few different gifts and prizes on the night — restaurant and meal vouchers, that sort of thing — people like the Hotel Canobolas, Best Western, Pick Me Flower arrangements, Second Mouse Cheese," Sean tells Orange City Life.
"We're welcoming all comers, you can buy a single ticket on your own, or enter as a team," Sean adds.
He also describes how the Lunchbox is part of the "Box" rally series — that also includes the singularly named S%&*Box and the Mystery Box events — that all raise vital funds for the Cancer Council.
"In the Lunchbox Rally, each team has one adult and one kid in each themed car. This year is extra special as we have two family cars taking on the trek," Sean explains.
"My wife, Karina, is driving a Mario-themed car with our nine-year-old son Arlo, and I am driving a Ghostbusters-themed car with our eight-year-old son Fletcher!"
This, Sean reveals, will also not be his first rodeo, or rally for that matter!
"I've previously done two Lunchbox rallies and three ShitBox rallies.
"Together with our community, our family has raised over $57,000 for the Cancer Council through past rallies," Sean discloses.
These good deeds, he explains, are a way of honouring the good work that the Cancer Council does for a disease that affects almost everyone.
"We've been touched by cancer amongst our family and friends. My Mum battled breast cancer, and we also lost a good friend who was only in his forties.
"Thankfully though, my Mum has come out the other side."
For now, the Ryan family is getting ready to hit the road this September for the Lunchbox Rally across regional Australia, starting and finishing in Dubbo.
"Apart from government, the 'Box' rally series is the biggest fundraiser for the Cancer Council anywhere," Sean says.
"In the 15 years they have run, they have raised about $65 million for the Cancer Council," he concludes.
His aim now is to get a crowd at Saturday night's fundraising event.
