A person has died following a single-vehicle crash north of Canowindra this morning.

Emergency services were called to Canowindra Road, about 15 kilometres north of the town, shortly before 7.45am on Sunday after reports a car had left the road and caught fire.

Officers attached to Chifley Police District arrived to find a Toyota had veered off the roadway, crashed and ignited. Rural Fire Service NSW personnel extinguished the blaze, but the driver died at the scene.

The person is yet to be formally identified.

A crime scene has been established, and an investigation is underway into the circumstances surrounding the crash. A report will be prepared for the information of the Coroner.

Canowindra Road was closed in both directions following the crash, with authorities urging motorists to avoid the area and use alternative routes.
