On Tuesday, the 18th of August, the Orange community paused to commemorate Vietnam Veterans Day and reflect on the 60th anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan.
The fierce battle in 1966 saw 17 Australians die in combat, another days later from wounds, while 25 more Australian servicemen were injured.
The battle was a pivotal moment in Australia’s involvement in the War in Vietnam, and today the 18th of August serves as a day to honour all the 60,000 Australians who served in the decade-long conflict, especially the 524 service personnel who lost their lives and the thousands more wounded between 1962 and 1972.
This year’s service was organised by Orange RSL Sub-branch President, Chris Colvin OAM, bringing together service personnel, families and friends, politicians, police and school students. Guest speakers at the event included Warrant Officer Class Two Tom Squires and Member for Orange, Phil Donato.
Orange Vietnam Veterans Association President, Lindsay Wright, wrote to Orange City Life to thank those involved.
To the Editor,
The above service was conducted at the cenotaph at Robertson Park on Tuesday, the 18th August 2-26 Commemorating the 60th anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan.
The service was well attended by service personnel, families and friends, the Mayor, politicians, police and many schoolchildren.
The success of the day is attributed to Mr Chris Colvin OAM, President of the Orange RSL Sub-branch for the arrangements made by him.
Guest speakers were WO2 Tom Squires, HQ5 Brigade, and Mr Philip Donato MP, State member for Orange. Thank you very much to both for excellent information.
Music was from Orange High School Students who did a marvellous job. Well done.

Piper: Mr Peter Reid, who also provided students for the catafalque party.
Special thanks to directors, managers, staff and members of the Orange Ex-Services’ Club for providing free food and accommodation for all who attended the club on completion of the service.
Our own Frank McCarthy was MC on the day, a fine day and a lovely service for remembering all service personnel.
