The NSW State Emergency Service (SES) has urged residents of regional and rural communities to step forward and volunteer as part of National Volunteer Week, highlighting the crucial role these volunteers play in emergency preparedness and response.

Running from Monday, May 19, to Sunday, May 25, National Volunteer Week celebrates the invaluable contributions of volunteers across the country.

NSW SES Commissioner Mike Wassing AFSM praised the more than 11,000 volunteers statewide who regularly assist during storms, floods and other emergencies.

“Our volunteers are everyday people doing extraordinary things. They are part of the fabric of their towns and communities,” Commissioner Wassing said.

He encouraged community members to consider volunteering with the SES, emphasising that no prior experience is necessary.

“Whether you're interested in hands-on field work, community engagement, logistics, or support behind the scenes, there’s a role for you,” he said.

“You don’t need previous experience – just a willingness to learn and a commitment to your community.”

Commissioner Wassing also reminded residents to participate in Wear Orange Wednesday (WOW Day) on Wednesday, May 21, a national initiative encouraging Australians to don orange clothing as a sign of gratitude towards SES volunteers.

“WOW Day is a moment to show visible appreciation for the volunteers who give their time and heart to help others,” he said.

“We’d love to see our communities turn orange this Wednesday in support of their local NSW SES volunteers.”

The theme for this year’s National Volunteer Week, “Something for Everyone”, highlights the diverse opportunities available within the NSW SES and the personal rewards volunteering can bring.

“Volunteering with the NSW SES is a rewarding way to connect with others, develop new skills, and be there for your community when it matters,” Commissioner Wassing said.
