Thommo & Son go off-road

After years of attempts to get involved in the ‘Shitbox Rally’ Michael Thompson will finally have the opportunity to put his pedal to the metal after being accepted in the ballot system for the 2020 Spring rally.

Who has he given the call up to be his offsider? His old man, Mark Thompson.

Held from October 10- 16, ‘Thommo and Son’ will travel from Mackay to Darwin via some of its most formidable roads, all in the name of charity.

Michael explained, “I have been told it’s the absolute pinnacle in terms of charity rallies and of course, it’s for a great cause, Cancer Council Cancer research.

“One of the conditions of the rally is that the car has to be under the value of $1000. Although dad would argue it’s worth much more, I couldn’t think of a better car to use than his 2001 VX Commodore, complete with 480,000kms on the clock (original motor), no A/C and not a straight panel on her.

“I can speak on behalf of the two of us in saying that we just hope the car makes it first and foremost, and second, that we don’t murder each other by the end of about 10 days cooped up in a car with one another,” Michael laughed.

“It’ll be good to spend some quality time with the old boy. I know it will be an experience of a lifetime, with like-minded people. We’ll get to visit some amazing remote locations and hopefully it’s good enough weather for camping in swags!”

Michael continued, “The community support we have received so far has been amazing! Especially in the current climate. We have found many businesses are keen to get behind us by means of donations and sponsorships! It’s a testament to our great community and just shows how supportive and giving they are even when facing adversity themselves.”
