To honour the local wartime history and service personnel of Millthorpe, two community groups, Millthorpe Village Committee Inc, and the Millthorpe & District Historical Society are undertaking commemorative projects thanks to federal government funding.

The Australian Government’s Saluting Their Service Commemorative Grants Program funds projects which highlight the service and sacrifice of Australia's servicemen and women.

The Millthorpe & District Historical Society will receive $5099 to grow their collection of war memorabilia on display at the Golden Memories Millthorpe Museum.

The funds have assisted in purchasing a mannequin, Light Horse Trooper uniform, and a replica firearm that will help preserve the history and continue telling the stories of our veterans for future generations.

The Millthorpe Village Committee Inc will receive $1535 to develop the Millthorpe Memorial Wall with a new plaque on the Millthorpe and District Roll of Honour. That has listed the names of local service personnel presently omitted from the roll. Additionally, another flagpole will be added to the memorial site.

Member for Calare and Minister for Veterans’ Affairs and Defence Personnel, Andrew Gee thanked the two community organisations for their dedication to preserve the memory of those from the village area who have served.

“Across the nation, barely a community has been left unmarked by the loss and tragedy of war and conflict. Memorials in nearly every town and city bear testament to this,” said Minister Gee.

“Our memorials help people grieve, help people remember, and provide the community a better understanding of the courage and sacrifice of those who have served Australia.

It is up to us not only to maintain these memorials but to foster an appreciation and understanding of the experience of service and what these men and women went through for our nation.”
