The Australian Tenors blend iconic Aussie tunes and classical arias in 2022 National Tour

The five remarkable voices of The Australian Tenors are bringing their classical tenor repertoire to the region as part of their 2022 tour – ‘I Still Call Australia Home’.

This year, the group will perform at Orange Civic Theatre on June 17-18, bringing a program for Anzac Celebrations along with “romance, excitement, warmth and humour” to their Anzac performances.

The famous voices are those of Lorenzo Rositano, Murray Mayday, Michael Butchard, Martin Buckingham, and John Donohoe.

As part of their concert, the five will be backed by The Southern Cross Orchestra under the direction of Musical Director and Conductor Glenn Amer.

Opera Australia’s Giuseppina Grech will be the guest soprano.

The Australian Tenors will combine Aussie classics such as ‘Waltzing Matilda’, ‘Australia My Country’ set to music, and ‘I Still Call Australia Home’ with classical arias such as ‘The Impossible Dream’, ‘The Hallelujah Chorus’, and ‘Phantom of the Opera’.

According to the group, their inspiration is drawn from classical composers.

“Such beautiful arias were written for that voice type,” they said.

“Puccini, Donizetti, Verdi - we sing some of their arias in our concert. In the last 50 years, there have been great composers such as Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber, Stephen Sondheim.”

While they can’t choose a favourite venue to perform in, Sydney’s Opera House is particularly special for the group.

“Sydney's Opera House has a great reputation worldwide and there’s nothing like performing there,” they said.

“We are spoilt for the choice of songs, arias that are a pleasure to perform. So no favourite.”

The Australian Tenors have performed nationally and internationally for presidents, heads of state and Australian Prime Ministers.

In their respective careers, each of the tenors have performed with Opera Australia.

The Australian Tenors have performed extensively with Opera Australia, Australian and International Symphonies and Philharmonic Orchestras.

“Vocalising every day is demanding, no matter how you feel,” the group said.

“The voice is an instrument and needs to be warmed up daily. Honey and lemon are also good for this.

“Contrary to belief, we go to bed as early as possible. The body needs constant maintenance in sleep, good eating and exercise.”

The Australian Tenors are excited to bring a show to regional areas, that patrons could not traditionally see unless they travel to a capital city.
