Luke and Uncle Rick

“Combining our knowledge together we formed Galumaay Dance Group and have been working in schools around town sharing culture, dance, respect in themselves and respect for each other, it’s a great thing that we have achieved here today at the opening ceremony of NAIDOC week, we have young ones from as young as two, up to 17 years old.

It’s all about getting together, celebrating unity and sharing our culture with people. These kids are going to be what drives culture into the future, when we slow down a bit, they will be the ones who come through and keep it alive, I think that’s one of the most important things.

We hope they get some inspiration seeing us and seeing kids their age, taking pride and dancing.

We don’t think of ourselves as leaders, but a lot of the young ones do so as long as we are setting a positive example for them, then we are doing the right thing. We find that even the non-indigenous kids really enjoy what we do, it’s a great opportunity to share our culture with them and be proud.”
